Fireplaces
Since the beginning of time, the ability of one to make fire was used as a resource. It was used as a resource for heat to stay warm, cook food, and to survive. As time wore on, fire still remained the one thing that people held onto. Even today, people sit around campfires to roast marshmallows and hotdogs, socialize, and play popular campfire games and also sing campfire songs. The Fireplace has long been a traditional special place in one’s home, creating a warm and cozy environment, and enjoying the fun times that are shared by sitting around the fireplace Read the rest of this entry »

What is the difference between a gas log fireplace and a wood burning fireplace?
I am looking at homes to buy and I want a Fireplace. I am not familiar with a gas log fireplace but fairly familiar with a wood burning fireplace. What is the difference between the two different fireplaces? Also, what are the advantages and disadvantages between the two? I don’t have tons of money to pay on gas logs. Are they expensive? How do they work? Read the rest of this entry »
Construction of my Outdoor Fireplace
Constructed in July-August, 2008, it includes about 175 cinder blocks, 50 solid blocks, a few hundred 80 year old bricks (which came from my house foundation when it was rebuilt a few months prior) for the stack, Sandstone for the flat surface/shelf areas, river rock for the front verticle faces, black marble for the Fireplace floor, and approx. 650 patio bricks with 8 bags of sand. The Patio edge is roughly 13 1/2 feet long each side which calculates to about 185 sq ft..
EDIT (May 2009): Just had to rebuild the underside of the fire box. The black marble floor that was exposed and had no support underneath, became brittle, cracked, and broke away over the last 9 months and had to be rebuilt with a solid block base under the new fire box floor. Not too difficult to fix, but was still an unexpected expense.

Many questions arise before the selection of a Fireplace. Such questions as should I purchase a Fireplace or Stove? Should I use wood or gas to fuel it? Once installed how do I take care of my new fireplace? Is everyone safe around the fire? How can I make sure that my house is accident proof with owning a fireplace? There are literally thousands of questions that one could think of that relates to fireplace safety and maintenance. However, having a fireplace in one’s home does not have to be thought of and looked upon as a chore that one doesn’t want to do and never looks forward to.
One thought that might also be considered if you don’t have a fireplace yet is: what kind of fireplace do you want? Since there are many types, like coal, wood burning, or gas fireplaces, the answers to that question may be varied. There are even electric fireplaces if you don’t want to clean up the mess afterward. You might already have a fireplace, however, but it may be losing heat. If that’s the case, maybe you should consider a fireplace insert so that you can enjoy the full effects of the fireplace that you already have. If you want a gas fireplace, will natural gas be used or propane? Usually the cheapest method of a fireplace is the traditional wood burning fireplace even though it is the one that you have to take care of the most. Most people prefer wood fireplaces, furthermore, just because of the great tradition that has long been held close and dear to them.
Fireplaces are settings, though, which transcend generations, age, race, and nationality. People all over the world implore the use of fireplaces. Maybe it’s because mankind likes the thought of the intimate settings in which one has surrounded by the fireplace. It might be because of the practicality of owning one, with it being used as a source for heat for your house. Whatever the case, having a fireplace in your house will definitely catch the eye of everyone who steps into your house. You, your friends, family, and close relatives will be sure to have a bonding experience and fun times enjoying being surrounded by that large ball of roaring fire that warms not only your heart, but their hearts as well!
To keep y`all warm this winter
